Best Time of Year to Buy Appliances

So you want to buy a new appliance. Washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers — buying any new appliance is a major purchase. As such, it represents an investment not only of your money but also of your time. That’s why, as a savvy consumer, you are willing to peruse websites and review different brands to ensure a quality purchase at the best price. However, while all that research certainly pays off, a bit of extra information may prove helpful as well: determining the best time of year to make that appliance purchase.

As it turns out, timing is everything when it comes to appliances. Although the fall months of September and October, as well as the after-holiday time of January, are generally considered the best times to buy all appliances, there are a few caveats:

Vacuum cleaners – Refrigerators – Washers and dryers – Generators

  • Vacuum cleaners are at their best price in April and May as stores hasten to move them from their shelves in preparation for the arrival of the latest models.
  • Refrigerators are another purchase best made in the springtime, specifically in May. Much like vacuums, new refrigerator models arrive in June, making the preceding month an excellent time for purchasing the refrigerator you have always wanted at a price that is as much as 50 percent off the regular price.
  • Washers and dryers are a good winter purchase. With new models arriving at that time, look for sales on these items individually and in combination with each other during President’s Day sales in February. Second best is November’s Veteran’s Day sales.
  • Generators, in the portable and standby versions, are a purchase you want to make before the season in which you will need it. In hurricane areas and others that experience summer brownouts, for instance, winter is the time for this purchase, whereas summer is the time to buy for those who need a generator during winter blizzards.

Of course, holiday sales such as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day often offer opportunities to buy appliances at substantial discounts as well. Although you may easily make year-round purchases at an outlet or other discount store — a particularly good choice for those times when your current appliance breaks beyond repair, and you need that new appliance immediately — waiting for the time of year when the appliance you want is at its best price will leave you money for other items you enjoy.
